  • Christmas came and went quickly, it seemed.  It is one of my favorite times of the year.  I love decorating the Christmas tree.  In my family we have a tradition of decorating the Christmas tree the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Now that I have my own house I get the excitement of decorating two christmas trees!  The one on the left is the tree at my parent's house.  Over the years my Mom and I have perfected the art of Christmas tree decorating.  This picture does not really do it justice.

Then on the right, is the Christmas tree that we had a the Rhorer House.  This tree certainly has a different flavor.   We will just say it is a work in progress.

Christmas time also brings lots of silly fun with family.  I love it!  Above are Cindy and Brayden.  They are a crazy pair.  These two together are a laugh a minute.

Below, you see Crist and I on the left and my grandmother on the right.  Ever since my very first Christmas, we have been going to Fayette, Alabama for these family get togethers.  In my 28 years of life, we have only missed one Christmas, and that was because we got snowed in.  Christmas in Alabama, is one of the best things that I cherish most in life!

On Christmas Eve we open our presents and then get together on Christmas morning for breakfast.  As you can see, my brother has a harder time getting up on Christmas morning, than he used to when we were kids.

So that is Christmas vacation.  So now we have made it to second semester.

Hang in there folks, I said that I was going to blog about my experiences with Barack Obama and I meant it.  It is coming very soon.

  • Update on Life

Well, it seems like there are still a few people out there that care to read this blog, so I guess I will try to update you all on what has been going on.

Obviously, it has been a really long time since my last entry, so it is going to take a few entries to catch up.

So we will take it a bit at a time.  I think the last time I wrote it was about New student outreach, so we will pick up from there and I will give a brief overview of what has happened since then.

So shortly after NSO was over it was time to go to Fall Conference.  I always really enjoy this weekend because it is the first opportunity that the students get to forget about school for a weekend  and focus on their relationships with God, as well as getting to know each other.  Since Fall Conference happens at the beginning of the school year, it is the weekend when the new freshmen stop feeling like the new kid in school and start to feel a part of the community.

After Fall Conference, Vision conference came along.  I taught a seminar on justice in the Black community.  We talked about how the labels that are put on us by society can distract us from dealing with what is really important in our communities.

Vision Conference was lots of fun!

Then it was time for Men's Large Group.  That is, large group worship planned and run entirely by the guys in the chapter.  It was a night of celebration.  As you can see, it ended with lots of fun with balloons!

And of course prayer is very important in everything that we do.  I have been really happy with the commitment to prayer that the chapter has taken on this year!

And then there was the National Underground Freedom Center in Cincinnati, OH.  It was a museum that documents the struggle for justice in America since the very beginning of or country's origin.  It is a museum that I think everyone should visit.

So that is a little update, a very brief one.  Stay tuned!  Coming soon: My adventures with Barack Obama.

  • Ministry in Full Swing!

    Hey Folks,

Here I am for a third time in one month.  Really, I think this is some kind of record for me.  Anyway, I wanted to let you all know that things are in full swing here at IU.  We got the year going with a full out sprint that we call New Student Outreach.  Here are some pics...

Of course we had to start off New Student Outreach with the traditional painting of the bridge.  For those of you who don't know, there are a couple of bridges on campus that anyone can paint to advertise an event.  These bridges get so much foot traffic  that advertising on them is priceless.  However, there is one catch.  Anyone can paint over it at anytime, first come, first served.  But by God's grace, our ads usually stay up at least 5-6 days, sometime much more than that.  You can't beat that for free advertising.

Here is the crew that helped paint.  Aren't they a good lookin' group!  :)  Meanwhile, there was another crew of about 10 people that were walking around campus hanging up flyers and using sidewalk chalk to invite everyone on campus to our free picnic and our first meeting of the year.

Then there was the legendary shopping trip at Sam's Club.  It takes a lot of food to feed 200 hungry college students.  Here is Leitia, she was our NSO Coordinator this year.  She did a great job of thinking through the details of everything that needed to happen to get NSO rolling.

Then it was time to fire up the grill!  If you grill it, they will come!!

It was a great!  We had a nice shady spot.  Many students came, ate and just enjoyed hanging out.  We met many new people that day.  Many of whom are already becoming strong members of our group.  We are now enjoying getting to know them and are looking forward to hanging out with them at Fall Conference, (more on that later).

At Faith Fest, we met many more people.  Faith Fest is an event on campus where all of the faith based organizations hand out flyers about their organizations.  Here are some really cool people that came to help get the word out.

And there was the "What's your Passion" display.  This was awesome.  I could not have predicted that we would get such a great response from students on campus.  It seemed that students were more than willing, even eager to share with us about the things that they are passionate about.  People wrote everything from music, to cats, to justice.  By the end of the day we had many more artistic representations of people's passions than we had space for.  It was great!  We also got to invite people to come check out our passion at our Large Group meeting that was happening on Thursday evening.

This will probably become a regular part of our outreach this year along with many other things.

So, that is a small snippet of New Student Outreach.  So I am going to try to update you all periodically on what is going on in these parts.  So stay tuned for the next installment.

In the mean time, I want to hear from you all.  Post a comment and tell me "What's your Passion?"

  • My Summer

Well Folks, notify the authorities.  I am blogging two days in a row, this is news worthy.  So I said that I would update you all on my summer, so here I am, keeping my word.  So here are a few highlights from my summer.

First off, the biggest thing is that my housemates, left for the summer to go to Thailand.  And anyone who knows me at all, knows that I don't really like being by myself in an "alone in the house at night" sense.  I like being by myself because I am an introvert and it allows for some good and often needed deep thought.  But I don't like being alone in the "scary movie, serial killer" sense of the word.  I know it sounds complicated, but all that deep thought can sometimes send my imagination on a ridiculous trip through all the scary movies that I have ever watched (which is not very many, because I know what my imagination can do with it).

So it took me a little while to adjust, but once I did, it turned out to be a pretty fun summer.  One of the things that I spent my time doing was taking care of a pretty large garden, that frankly, was a little too much for me to handle.

But, it produced lots of great veggies.  I picked a harvest like the one pictured above every week.  And I really enjoyed the great food that I was able to enjoy because of it, like this veggie pizza made of all veggies from my garden.

I also enjoyed caring for some flowers that I planted.  I think that I enjoy this much more.  Flowers in pots are less overwhelming and a lot prettier.  And thanks to my Mom, I actually feel like I know what I am doing with flowers.  She has a great green thumb and has taught me a lot about caring for flowers.  It is just too bad that I never got out there in the hot sun with my Dad in his vegetable garden.  I could have learned a lot.

I spent some time babysitting here and there.  Isn't he a cutie.

I spent some fun time with family too!

Family is great!  I went to two family reunions in one weekend.  It was pretty crazy, but lots of fun.  And of course I enjoyed hanging out with the cutest little cousin that I have ever had.  Look at that big smile!

Just before my two family reunions in one weekend, I help my Mom and cousins pull off a surprise birthday party for my Grandmother.  She was so surprised and flattered to see so many people that care and love her a lot.

Well, that is a little update of my summer.  Up next, what you all have been waiting for... An update on InterVarsity at Indiana University.  Stay tuned.
